Unlike conventional decafs that rely on solvents, Unplugged is made using the Swiss Water Process — a chemical-free, 100% natural method that preserves every note of the coffee’s original character while removing over 99% of the caffeine.

 

How the Swiss Water Process Works
The Swiss Water Process removes caffeine using only water, green coffee extract (GCE), and activated charcoal — absolutely no chemicals. Here’s how it’s done:

 

1. Preparation: Unroasted green beans are soaked in hot water to open their pores and dissolve caffeine and flavour compounds.
2. Green Coffee Extract (GCE) Creation: This water, now rich in flavour and caffeine, is passed through activated carbon filters.
3. Caffeine Filtration: The carbon filters capture the large caffeine molecules but let smaller flavour compounds pass through — creating a flavour-rich “Green Coffee Extract.”
4. Decaffeination of New Beans: New batches of green beans are soaked in this GCE. Because it’s already saturated with flavour, only caffeine diffuses out.
5. Osmosis & Flavour Preservation: Through osmosis, caffeine moves out of the beans and is trapped by the filters, while the flavour remains locked in.
6. Continuous Cycle: This process repeats for 8–10 hours until the beans are over 99% caffeine-free.
7. Drying & Roasting: The beans are then dried, roasted, and packed — ready for a clean, naturally decaffeinated espresso.
